Flat Rate + Surcharge: Offset Your Processing Costs

The Clover Merchant Surcharge Program lets you add a percentage fee to your customers' credit card transactions to help offset your credit card processing costs. It's part of our new Flat Rate + Surcharge Discount Pricing — ask us for a quote based on your business.

How it works

• A 2.40% surcharge is applied to eligible credit card transactions and itemized on the customer's receipt.
• Debit and prepaid cards are not eligible, except Interac Debit, which is limited to 25¢ per transaction.
• The same 2.40% must apply to all eligible credit card transactions — you can't pick and choose transactions or vary the rate.
• There is no additional fee to join. The program is available to all Clover merchants on every software plan.
• Surcharging is not permitted in the Province of Quebec.

Your responsibilities

• Clearly display the surcharge rate at the point of sale and point of entry so customers know before they pay by credit card.
• Register your business with Mastercard 30 days before enabling surcharging. Visa and American Express don't require prior registration.
• Refund surcharge amounts on returns. Enrolling in the program handles several requirements for you: itemizing the surcharge on receipts, blocking it on debit and prepaid cards, and refunding it on returns.
• Once you surcharge, you can no longer charge a convenience fee or service fee.

"We impose a surcharge of 2.40% when paying with a credit card, which is not greater than our cost of acceptance. The surcharge amount will appear on your receipt. We do not surcharge Debit or prepaid cards, except for Interac Debit."
